Did you know that despite weighing only 2% of our body, our brain consumes 20% of our body's energy?

Our brains allow us to perceive and interact with the world around us. But how does the brain recharge? You guessed it, we sleep. Sleep is not merely a state of rest; it's a recharging process that allows our brains to function optimally. While we sleep, our brain processes new experiences and information, while also eliminating waste products that pile up when we are awake. The brain orchestrates the release of hormones and proteins, regulating temperature, appetite, and mood to ensure our brain is fully revitalized for the next day’s challenges.

But what happens if we do not get enough sleep? How does that affect our brain? And what if the brain becomes ill or injured, does that affect our sleep? Join us for an interactive sofa chat with experts and learn about the fascinating relationship between sleep and the brain!

PROGRAM

Session 1: The recipe for a restful night’s sleep
You have probably heard about the importance of getting enough sleep, but what exactly does enough mean? Is it solely about sleep duration, or is there more to it? In this session, we will talk about what a good night’s sleep is and what happens in our brains during sleep. So whether you are an early bird or a night owl, let’s embark together on this journey to uncover the secrets of optimized sleep.

Session 2: The power of sleep
Sleep is important for our health and well-being. But what happens if the brain becomes ill or injured? The connection between sleep and health becomes even more clear in conditions such as migraines, multiple sclerosis, or concussions. In this session we will discuss how sleep can be affected when the brain is ill, but also how sleep can make us healthier and aid recovery.

This event is brought to you by NorHEAD, NTNU and St. Olavs Hospital.
