Energy is a rather new term introduced in 1807, before that scientist used the term “force” (Latin: vis) as a label for what we today call energy and other quantities as well.

The confusion concerning different use of “force” and the quantity of motion is exemplified in the so called “vis viva controversy”. The controversy gives a picture of both the development of our understanding of the world but also the development of the scientific method. Two of the central characters in the resolution of the controversy is not well known today; Willem ‘s Gravesande and Émilie du Châtelet, the talk will give the background and the contribution of these two, and the lesson we can learn.

The lecture is followed by the experiment Gravesande's balls, which also takes place in the exhibition premises.

The Talk is free of charge and will be held by researcher Rolf Jonas Persson from the Department of Physics at NTNU.

Please note that photos will be taken during the festival on the 22nd and 23rd of September. The images will only be used for communication and information related to the festival going forward
